Review: AS-SAHAR "PHENOMISTIK" CD 2010

As-Sahar
"Phenomistik" 2010
Blackwind Productions/Nebiula Production

As-Sahar was a great band, truly they are. There were some thoughts concluded that so-called "Malay" death metal were derived from them. But I'll not waste my time with the epistemology of Malay death metal. Death metal is meant to be death metal.

My encounter with Singaporean bands can be traced back in early 90s where zines, flyers and tape trading are the most sources that I can get. Of course, before that there were Abhorer, Xtreme Obsession, Mutation, Martyrdom, etc. I remember that Impiety came late, but As-Sahar was latter. Source? Flyers of their "Primitively Eastern Winds". I got this demo from their distributor in Malaysia. I don't know where the hell it was right now.. Their next release Promo 1993. I got this by sending a blank tape to their address. Their further was "Santau" EP, which caught a deal with Nebiula Productions to re-release for Malaysian open market with the new name "Meditation Embun Pagi". I think that was the idea since it's pretty different from metal-archives.com.

The "Phenomistik" debut released by Nebiula Productions in the year of 1996. I think it was only in cassette format. Luckily Blackwinds Productions (owned by Malek  Hanael - bassist of As-Sahar) conjunction with Nebiula Productions, re-released this in CD digipak fomat. It's a blessed I think, to have this album in my hand after not giving any proper hearings to their releases since "Baku Karama" 1999. The previous "Tir" (2008) really not bad, but I prefer "Phenomistik" due to the raw and primitive sounds.

Overall, I guess there are no extra songs in this re-release (as what re-release always did). But it's a fine package with lyrics and all that. The sounds probably lifted, not sure whether it's been remastered or not.

So, please find a copy if you are into depressive, fast black metal with eastern touches.

Sepetang di pasar malam..

First round, jumpa pakcik duduk bersila mintak sedekah..
End of story..

Second round.
Hala nak balik..
Pakcik tu masih duduk mintak sedekah, tangan kiri pegang rokok,
tangan kanan pegang handphone sambil bercakap..
The story begins..

Aku selalu jugak ditegur oleh rakan waktu melepak kat mapley area kl.
Ada pakcik, makcik, budak kecik, semua mintak duit
Aku kasi seringgit, dua, lima, mana mampu time tu.
Rakan aku tegur aku, tak payah bagi, tu tipu semua, sindiket, buta, tapi tangan pakai jam..

Petang semalam?
Aku terasa agak sedih dan tak ikhlas
Dah la mintak sedekah, tak segan silu hisap rokok, pakai handphone.
Although takde kriteria untuk membolehkan a beggar to be labeled as beggar,
pakai hisap rokok tu dah jadi indicator untuk bukan jadi beggar (at least from my opinion)..

Review: NERLICH "INNARDS" CASSETTE EP 2009

Nerlich
"Innards" Cassette EP 2009
Nihilistic Holocaust

Ok, it's brand new for me. Haven't heard of their name before. But death metal from Finland is always promising! Not that I've put too much hope on NERLICH as what I've been putting on Purtenance, Xysma, Disgrace, Demilich, Demigod, Midnight Sun, etc, but NERLICH has really something that can make me play the tape over and over again.

First of, forget the sound of Swedish melo-shit-Gothenburg death metal. Finnish always suck in copying the Swedish, that's for sure. NERLICH is a straight forward death metal, the tempos are fast, the vocals are semi-growl, I must say that NERLICH is lying on the right lane of death metal. Moreover, in my simplest opinion, NERLICH is more alike The Crown style of death metal, with heavy touches here and there.

Of course, "Innards" is the first time I hear the, thus I cannot make any comparisons with their previous releases. "Defabricated Process" was released as their debut album in 2007, but I hardly find it for a decent price. Nevertheless, this is an album that I am currently sought for, to enable me to make better judgment on NERLICH.

Overall, this cassette EP was released by Nihilistic Holocaust, I'm not sure the purpose of the release. It might be the original EP was really sucked in presentation. The cassette is much more decent in nature, and the cover printed nicely. This EP got it's own fine package. Recommended for moderate death metalheads!!

Review: NOCTURNAL VOMIT "INFERNAL ASCENSION OF THE GODS" DEMO 2003

Nocturnal Vomit
"Infernal Ascension of The Gods" Demo 2003
Self-released

Well, the reviews said it was death metal, old school one! Needless to say, this is more into black death version of metal, in the veins of Blasphemy, Beherit, Sarcofago, you absolutely got the point.

Not that I despised that kind of music, but things got so far away apart from being a musical creation that contains melodies. This is total hatred, total chaos, and so much of total destruction.

I think I'd rather let someone else review this material. Being an old release is one thing, not really my cup of tea is another thing, thus might resulting a bias judgment.

To conclude, this is a 6-songs demo (5 songs plus an intro, which I barely cannot recognized it. Looks like it starts up straight with a song. Hey, what's the point of having an intro right!!). This demo was released in 2003. Nocturnal Vomit, since then, had several eps and splits under their arms. This is a must for any raw black death metal fans out there. For me, I'd prefer to give this a few spins, and after that, let the tape joins the others on the shelf.

22 Februari 1992 - In Memory of Sudirman

Dah hampir 20 tahun Allahyarham Sudirman meninggal dunia.
Just to share some thoughts, Allahyarham meninggal di hari yang sama aku mendaftar di MRSM back in 1992.
So, apart from being a huge fan of his melodies, pemergian Allahyarham memang akan aku kaitkan dengan memories pendaftaran second intake MRSM dulu.

Masih teringat tape kartrij dalam kereta Datsun ayah aku dedulu, pasang lagu Sudirman.

We lost a star..

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

It's 15th of February 2011!!

Agak unik, I have to refresh back in the year of 1987, masa tu aku di Kg. Ganchong, precisely kat Kg. Pulau Rusa. Kampung yang cukup permai satu masa dulu, still miss the smell of the sungai and paya dekat rumah arwah tok aku.

Since then, aku terpaut dengan Maiden. Lambat? Tahun itu juga aku mengenali Wild Dogs "Reign of Terror", Death Angel "Frolic Through The Park", even Slayer "Show No Mercy" pun baru la tahun tu aku didedahkan.

Kalau nak kira kaset Maiden aku (keluaran EMI, kotak and kaset kuning), hanya ada Piece of Mind sampai Seventh Son, then No Prayer, then era Blaze ada la jugak beli tape. Selain daripada itu, singles? 7"EP? Other merchandises? Terus terang, takde. Kecuali ada la saputangan "key" yang jalur-jalur dengan tema "Somewhere In Time" dibeli di sebuah kedai rock di Kompleks Teruntum, pernah juga aku pegi Kompleks Pertama untuk menempah tshirt Maiden dengan tema "Maiden Japan" dengan sticker iron-on. Ya, tema "Maiden Japan" ditampal pada tshirt merah... ganasss gitu.

Banyak lagi tempuhan dan nostalgia aku tatang berkenaan Maiden. Mungkin selepas tamat hari esok, aku garap satu per satu.

Insya-Allah lepas Subuh aku bertolak ke Johor Bahru. Perasaan? Mungkin biasa saja sebab personally aku dah agak kurang dengan gig/konsert. Mungkin faktor umur? Mungkin faktor bosan?

Malam ni aku bermalam di rumah bonda kerana senang untuk anak-anak aku terus ditinggalkan sehari bersama nenda masing-masing. Wife terpaksa berkursus untuk 2 hari, so aku jaga anak malam ni. Bosan? Aku sort and susun balik harta aku kat rumah..

Review: SUFFERCATION "DAY OF DARKNESS"

If I had to confess on the most admired Malaysian metal release, I have to say, it's SUFFERCATION "Day of Darkness", which debut can be tracked back to 1992. There are several reasons why, from my opinion, "Day of Darkness" can be nominated as one of the best Malaysian release.

First of, timing. Timing is perfect when "Day of Darkness" was released. In the early 90s, most of the bands do not play technical, hyperspace-fast death metal. Deicide, Suffocation, is quite an exception. But most likely bands are in the mid-tempo death metal. Technical, speed, were not a requirement back then. Image, lyrics, growl vocals, darkness perhaps were the important thing. "Day of Darkness" does have the latter aspects to be perfect in timing of release.

Secondly, brutality. Suffercation (perhaps in their first and second album only) offers sheer aggressiveness, not in the drum works, but mostly in the guitars and vocals. The vocals were so brutal that most of listeners in the 1990s, when the album hit the street, were so amused (at least that's what happened in my "circle of friends" in school when I said that there is "no vocal effects used in the recording" - sort of reading what's been written in the cassette cover) and personally, I think Suffercation's vocals are a bit unique that can be distinguished easily from other Malaysian bands during that time.

Thirdly, nostalgic. "Day of Darkness" was the first Malaysian death metal released in open market, a great determination which required a great gambling! With limited open-mindedness in the market (weird though people today are normally accepting the "indie-music")

This short crap is just a warm-up as I just got SUFFERCATION "Day of Darkness: The Re-awakening" CD, provided by Afterlife Productions/DeadHead zine. I still listen to this CD to get the old-school feeling back.

Review: MORBID SYMPHONY "EVIL CARES FOR ITS OWN" DEMO 1991

Morbid Symphony (UK)
Evil Cares For Its Own Demo 1991
Self-released

Well, it's been a long time since I last bought a tape. Considering the time and technologies overshadowing me and me perception towards quality of music (digital vs analog thing). With the help of father of all evil (www.ebay.com), I accidentally jumped into a discovery of a long-sought band, UK's MORBID SYMPHONY.

Why it has been one of my sought-after thing? Firstly, because this band was so underrated, that they had released an album called "Seasons Past" back in 2002, self-released to be exact, and this album is one of the thing I couldn't find from the net, really!! So, winning the bid for their demo is actually on big step to losing more money in search of something that I myself don't know the value.

Secondly, the flyers of this demo spread throughout the world, with my personal contacts were from UK, I think MORBID SYMPHONY did caught my attention. Nonetheless, the limitation was in my purchasing power back in the 1991.

Thirdly, I personally love the artwork on their releases. I used their "Permanence In Dark Earth" EP cover for my heading picture in this blog. So, all in all, I love this band!

"Evil Cares.." contains 5 tracks of thrashy death metal. One to differentiate them from the other UK bands which during that time, haunted by the generalization of "British Doom Death". The songs are simple in arrangements, mid-paced death metal. Nothing much to compare with other bands today. But I guess, apart from being biased, MORBID SYMPHONY is one of my favorite band. Too sad that I couldn't dig more of their releases.

Review: THE CROWN "DOOMSDAY KING" 2010

The Crown
Doomsday King 2010
Century Media Records

I started listening to THE CROWN (formerly known as CROWN OF THORNS) when their debut "The Burning" hit the street back in 1995. In 20 years of duration playing heavy/thrash/death metal, my perception is still the same. Some of you might consider their "Eternal Death" perhaps the most triumphant release so far. With "Hell is Here" in 1999, the ultimate death metal tunes turned out to be more heavy plus death metal oriented, a combination of melodramatic heaviness and semi-guttural vocals.

I'd rather say that "Doomsday King" is still has nothing to offer. Likewise their previous "Possessed 13" and the releases before that, I think that THE CROWN has grown up to be more heavy in sound, technical in playing, but has no "x-factor" to differentiate them with other heavy/thrash/death metal bands.

To simply conclude, "Doomsday King" is something you sought for when you are a follower of the Swedish death metal, but if you are looking for something new in death metal, then this is not your cup of tea. Been listening to this album over and over again, the brutality is there, but the feeling of originality is something that is lack in this beautifully produced album.

Bicara Akademik, 1 Februari 2011

Moga majlis ilmu begini sentiasa diadakan.
